General route ideas
okay ,without taking an official vote ,i´d like to hear all the participants views on the route.where they would like it to start, east or west.what region they would like to start off the run,and where they would like to end the run ,and what they would like to see in between.how many miles you want to ride per day.certain stopovers you would like to make. just want to see where everybody stands ,then we can make some decisions.this thread is open to cannonballers only.thanks

RE: General route ideas
Here are my thoughts... I like the Coast to Coast. East to West (sun reasons, Cooler weather first part of the ride) I, like I assume some others have to work for a living and really cannot afford to be gone longer than two weeks off work. While I don't want to cut the ride short I think a route that can take in both coasts yet keep the milage down to a minimum would still be quite an adventure we could all be very proud bragging about. Let's remember that this is a first of this type of endurance for many of us and we could make this maiden Cannonball a huge success but stay within reason with regards to milage and length of time. Anyway this shapes up I will be there for the ride of my life...Thanks for the opportunity to be apart of this great adventure. Kris

I like Coast to Coast also. It seems that all "epic adventures of distance", go from coast to coast. Since we all will pilot air cooled vehicles, I would suggest staying away from southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico's deserts. I have driven 1910 to 1916 cars coast to coast a dozen times in another event and found the reception and fun of the small towns were 100 fold that of the large towns.

Harley Davidson dealers , Chambers of Commerce, and many museums would give us great welcomes and more. Some might host lunches and other small town events.

RE: General route ideas
How about the "old Rhineback Aerodrome" In Rhineback. They fly , House, Demonstrate, and Show 1909 to 1917 Aircraft, They ride and show the same era motorcycles, Cars, bicycles and clothing in their spectacular shows.

They are in New York about 150 miles north of New York City. They have at least 6 AMCA regions close and it is green and cool everywhere. The more I think about it, we could just circle the area for about a week until we get the nerve to head west (just Kidding).
This might be to far north to plan to stop-over at Dales "WTT" museum, so maybe it may not work as well.
Thanks,,,Alan Travis

RE: General route ideas
Westport, CT (on the East Coast) to Eastport, CA (on the West Coast) is about 2,300 miles.

I have suggested hooking up with the Fairfield County Concours (http://www.fairfieldcountyconcours.com/) which will be held in Westport on Sept 11 and 12, 2010.

What do others think about using this excellent car AND motorcycle event as the jump off point (if we go East to West) or the end location if we go West to East?

They would give us our own tent and display area and quite a large crowd of admirers and supporters.

RE: General route ideas
i can see this whole voting thing online is not going to work.i will call all the entrants and find a concensus. if you would like to express your opinion online ,just tell me east or west for the start.then we`ll go to the next step.

This is my first time to chime in. I don't think it makes any difference which direction we go, I think the route is the bigger question to be addressed at the moment. My feelings are that this is going to be a very hard ride on all of us old timers and our machines to say the least. The southern route is much shorter , the weather will be a lot more tolerable and I don't think the mountain ranges are as severe. Remember guy's, we're riding gutless motorcycles with even worse brakes. Do we really need to prove something by adding the extra mileage? I think the fact that we are riding 100 year old motorcycles from coast to coast is enough. As far as where we start, the guys that live on the west coast are gonna want to start there and east coasters are gonna want to start there. I think I will have to agree with Victor. Riding in the mornings with the sun behind you is a big plus.I'll go wih the majority. Dave
