RE: Excelsior racers
I certainly agree with you about Excelsiors. The Big Valve X's were wicked competitors and gave Indian fits. The thing I always admired about Excelsior was that they sold Big Valve machines to the general public, unlike Harley and Indian. I know they weren't race tuned machines but I'll bet they humiliated anyone foolish enough to race against them on the street.

The Excelsior boardtrack pics are really awesome! You get a good look at how the boards were put together. Smooth at high speed but a wipeout was certain to skewer you with splinters. Even a quick pose for a pic developed an oil slick! Man, I can see why it was the biggest spectator sport back in the day!!

RE: Excelsior racers
There is a great book called" American X " by Thomas Bund, that tells the complete story of the Excelsior Motorcycle Co. Unfortunately, the text is in German, but the photographs and reprints of the catalogs and advertisements are awesome!
If the text could be converted into English, I'm sure that it would become a must have for every Excelsior enthusiast.
