Other Route Recommendation
Perhaps I am pushing for this tie in with the Fairfield County Concours too much but I feel it would be an amazing way to end a ride of a lifetime.
After spending much too long on the Google maps I laid out a route I'd like others to at least consider. It runs from Eastport, CA (in the west) to Westport, CT (in the east). It is a little over 3,200 miles. I have not figured out how to post the route here, but, as I have it plotted out, the ride would take 14 days coast to coast with each day ranging from 163 miles the very last day, otherwise the lowest daily miles is 201, the most is 301 miles. Route is Eastport, CA to Carson City, NV 217 miles Carson City, NV to Eureka, NV 231 miles Eureka NV to Eureka UT 301 miles Eureka UT to Dinosaur, CO (love the name) 222 miles Dinosaur CO to Glen Comfort, CO 274 miles Glen Comfort, CO to Benkelman, NE 223 miles Benkelman, NE to Milford, NE 258 miles Milford, NE to Lucerne, MO 254 miles Lucerne, MO to Pekin, IL 219 miles Pekin, IL to Peru, IN 201 miles Peru, IN to Greenwich, OH 204 miles Greenwich, OH to Pigeon, PA 220 miles Pigeon, PA to Scranton, PA 230 miles Scranton, PA to Westport, CT and easy 163 miles. If necessary we could add a few miles per day here and there and perhaps cut a full day or even two out of the route, but that's up for discussion. My thinking is that we don't want to trash the bikes or ourselves, but we also should not set such to slow pace as to remove the fun and challenge. I figure if we are riding at an average of 25-30 mph for 8 hours a day for almost 14 days, that would be more tiring than most of us are used to. #15 Buzz Kanter 1915 Harley in 2010, and 1929 Harley for 2012 Classic Harley fourm Classic Harley info Harley magazine |

RE: Other Route Recommendation
I've been playing on google maps for a couple hours now and messed it up a little here and there but I thought of some options. Anyway, your not kidding Buzz.... a fella can lose track of time playing with this mapping business. I'm going to try and post a link with a modified version of your route. So far you have us routed through Springville and it would be cool to check out Jeff's stomping grounds. I did do a little detour in Nebraska to head for Iowa. That way we could hit Anamosa and head up to Milwaukee. From there I have mapped two options. One would include crossing into Canada from Michigan and cross back to the U.S. in New York. I don't know this may or may not be a pain in the butt with customs but would be the most direct way to go and only adds about 76 miles to your total cross country numbers. We could also turn back south at Milwaukee, skirt around Chicago to Bloomington, IL and resume the remainder of your original route. Just some more points to ponder.......

Because we are doing this almost a year out we have time to try all sorts of different ways to go. And I appreciate the fact that we can all be involved in the process thanks to this forum and web site. If we can justify the time it would be great to stop in Anamosa, IA to check out Parhams' excellent motorcycle museum, and also to stop at Harley's museum in Milwaukee. But that would add at least 2 more days to an already long trip (assuming we actually stop for more than the time it takes to gas up). I am a bit concerned about crossing into Canada and back into the US as the new law now insists we produce a passport and who knows what other hassles might arise when they see a bunch of loose screws on rusty old motorcycles and all the chase/support vehicles. I don't fancy them searching through all the boxes of tools and spares. #15 Buzz Kanter 1915 Harley in 2010, and 1929 Harley for 2012 Classic Harley fourm Classic Harley info Harley magazine |

RE: Other Route Recommendation
Buzz..... I agree with you on the Canada crossing thing. A problem at the border could ruin an otherwise wonderful trip! I'll sit down a little later and try to fix up the mapping I've done and re-post it. I still like the idea of Anamosa and Milwaukee but maybe that's just me being selfish 'cause I haven't been to the H-D museum yet.......
Keeping the time down somewhat would be my preference. My job may freak out if I say I'm leaving for a month......

RE: Other Route Recommendation
It could be a pain getting in and out of the U.S. I've only done it solo or with my family. I don't know how a whole caravan of bikes and the entourage that follows it will fare. If it's a consideration then maybe the border should be aware of it prior to getting there. As far as WTT that would be an awesome stop! There's a lot of points to choose from maybe the south is the way to go? Buzz what kind of time would it take to go from Maggie Valley to Westport?
Oh! and on a side note I see that your riding a '13 H-D. Did you manage to acquire one or did somebody offer you a loaner? Either way that's a very cool bike to be piloting! Best of luck...... |

Wheels Through Time is a long days' drive by modern car or truck from Westport. If we do end at Westport, CT riders have the option of trucking or trailering down to WTT after the event, I think it's about 600-700 miles south. #15 Buzz Kanter 1915 Harley in 2010, and 1929 Harley for 2012 Classic Harley fourm Classic Harley info Harley magazine |

RE: Other Route Recommendation
Canada is pretty easy. I went up there this July with 55 bikes and riders for a 5 day ride around British Columbia. The only problem was one guy had an outstanding warrant for a DUI. He got turned back at the border, and rode around by himself in Washington. We did it about 8 years ago too, one guy had to turn back and rent a storage locker to keep his pistol in while he went into Canada.
