route 4

RE: route 4
I'd love to ride the whole thing, but we'll see. There are some beautiful roads between the Oregon / Washington coast and the Eastern part of the state. Then it gets much flatter past the Cascades until you hit Idaho. I am guessing you want somewhat flat if possible for the single speed bikes? I am driving to the coast this weekend... I'll take the Washington side (Hwy 4) along the Columbia River to where it dumps into the Pacific. There is a large bridge (2 Miles?) that crosses at the mouth over to Astoria, Oregon. The road back to Portland on the Oregon side is Hwy 30. Both of these roads are two lane, with the occasional passing lane. Hwy 30 gets a lot of traffic. Hwy 4 not so much. Another possibility is starting at Seaside, OR or Canon Beach and taking Hwy 26. That road is 4 lane most of the way, but does get more traffic. I'll take it the following time I go to the coast. A few weekends ago, I stopped to see Doc Schuster, south of Corvallis, Oregon. It is a fantastic trip from his place in Monroe, OR to the Central Oregon coast, but the mountains may be a bit much. If you have a modern bike, I highly recommend it!

He crossed Lake Michigan to Mantiwoc and headed south on highway 43. Was that a route you were thinking of to avoid Chicago?

Seaside is a very nice place, great beach, more of a tourist town. Lots of lodging there. It is a pretty scenic area. Canon Beach even more so, but less hotels. Shouldn't be much of a problem either way finding lodging. I might be able to round up a house to rent with a garage to keep the bikes in. Astoria up the road is an old fishing town. Come a couple of days early and we'll catch some salmon. Coho (silvers) are running hard right now, limit six per day per person on the river near my house, and most are getting their limit! Next year is supposed to be a banner year. I'll get some photos of the towns at the coast.

i'll have to rely on our wisconsin breathren to lead us thru the wilderness.hopefully by the time the route is chosen we'll have input and pics from people that ride in each region, one day at a time we'll come up with a winner.

jim ,part of the support teams job will be to gaurd the bikes at night,or when we go to dinner or other diversions.we will try to have a few pop up canopies with sides ,that we can pop up at every stopover ,and park the bikes in ,with a gaurd all night. and i will definatly get there a few days early for them salmon.

If done right and with enough advance planning I'd bet you could get a police escort into and out of town. Perhaps Harley could help coordinate this.

There is a car ferry from Manitowoc, Wisconsin (north of Milwaukee) to Ludington, Michigan. Another goes from Milwaukee to Muskegon, Michigan.

Personally, I would like to see the route go thru Chicago. As it is shown now, it passes within a couple of miles of my home in the northwest suburbs. And it would be pretty cool seeing the riders going down Sheridan Road on the North Shore and Lakeshore Drive in the heart of the city!

But getting thru the city would definitely be an eye opening experience for the riders. EEK! The cagers here won't care about historical significance or nostalgia - they just want you out of their way.

RE: route 4
I'm still convinced the bicycle routes are the way to go.
San Francsco/Seattle/LA to East Coast or vise versa' they go through many national parks on B roads and the rest of the roads are right for out type of motorcycles. There seem to be so many other things to be concernedwith-- why re-invent the wheel. unless we want the run to have it's own unique route.
I've ridden quite abit out in the California Central Valley on the back roads and being frank, the way things are being planned I don't think there will be alot of time for side trips and sightseeing. Much longer trip times would be needed to do side trips etc---unless --you have servants.
Example. This weekend went on a 100 miler over to the ocean and back
Lost both master links on chains. Had two spares, and made it home ok.
It took 1 hour to fix the bike in glorious 75f weather.
Things go wrong with the best of prep and eat up time.
two of us worked on the roblem too. will explain the cause later.
