RE: Rally Roadbook Holder
Question - Will we need a set up like this for the 2012 Cannonball? If so riders need to know early so we can plan accordingly.

RE: Rally Roadbook Holder
Hi Buzz, you are correct, a roadbook holder would be a good idea. we will be using the same type of course instructions, although we have updated them somewhat. the longest day will have 10 sheets, and the sheets can be trimmed to about 6 1/2". I will be sending out the roadbook info. in the packet that all the riders will receive. I hope to get the packet out by the end of january. We sent out so many emails last year ,that after a while most riders just were not reading them.
Here is a sample of the current course instructions. This was the only section in the entire ride that utilized any interstates. but we have since changed this section, and now there is only one mile of interstate for the entire ride from coast to coast. |

RE: Rally Roadbook Holder
Hi Lonnie.
Just received my Acerbis unit (I'm a low maintenance guy). It will hold 6.5 inch wide paper, but nothing larger. By any chance have you tested the 2012 route for one day in an Acerbis? Best Regards, and Happy New Year! |

RE: Rally Roadbook Holder
I used one last time and it worked fine. One thing I found helped is to add just one small drop of oil to the the rubber seal the rollers go through. This creates an easier operation.

Acerbis Road Book Holder
Based on Buzz' comments, and the lower price, I bought an Accerbis 126.030 Road Book Holder from MX1West in Cotati, CA. After S&H it hit $80.
I've now mounted it on my Scout, and put some sample pages in it. So here are a few comments (so what if I haven't actually used the device on the road yet): ![]() The unit is built for bicycles. The mounting hardware will probably be useless on a vintage motorcycle (what a surprise). I adapted mounting gear I had previously used to affix a camera. It allows some modest amount of adjustment. ![]() No, I don't have an advanced copy of the route! That's the sample page Lonnie posted a month ago. I copied it multiple times and trimmed the copies to 6.5 inches wide. Yes, the directions fit. I didn't remember to add a leader and trailer. You'll need at least 6 inches, probably a page, on both ends. Buzz was, of course, correct. You'll have to lubricate the grommet holes to make it easier to turn the spindles. I had to disassemble and reassemble the unit to position the take-up handle on the top right instead of top left. So, I widened the holes slightly in the process. It comes white, maybe whiter than white. Not politically correct. I painted it black (but missed the edges). Actual rust would have been better. Now the significant issue. It took me 15 minutes to trim eight pages and tape them together. It took 20 minutes to get the roll wound onto the supply spindle, started on the take-up spindle, and the metal paper guides inserted. Then it took another 10 minutes to get the clear plastic cover correctly inserted and closed. Next time I'll tape the prior page bottom over the next page top so that the edges do not interfere with the cover, especially when mounting. And, I'll get better with practice. But, you should not expect to do this chore just before your starting time. I think the device will work, assuming a day's worth of tulips don't require more than eight or so pages (ten total with leader and trailer). It may be water-tight. And, it is a nice size, not too large. But, I'm not excited. |

RE: Rally Roadbook Holder
hi jeff, i agree with you that it does take some time to get the instructions loaded. i remember in 2010 it was a regular chore that the pit crew had to perform the night before each days ride. after a while most got fairly good at it. being on a late model machine i found it much easier to use the map holder in my tank bag, and just dispose of each sheet when i was done with it. if i am able to ride the JD this year i'll be using a tank bag again as it serves alot of purposes. of course with the smaller tanks on the 101's a tank bag probably wouldn't work too well.
